Band News - Term 3, Week 1

Tutorials for students in Year 5 and 6 and rehearsals for all bands and recorder groups resumed this week, with tutorials for students in Year 3 and 4 recommencing on Monday. Next week, we are embarking on a new and exciting chapter in the history of the Band Program. When government guidelines caused tutorials to go online towards the end of Term 1, all students were mailed home music for the next couple of terms. We made the decision then, to allocate some of the same pieces across bands with the vision of the bands coming together to perform as one. This initiative will commence from Monday 27 July and will remain in place for the remainder of Term 3. Students will have both the opportunity to be extended while also benefiting from the experience to lead and mentor others. All bands will continue to rehearse on the same days and times with the format as follows:

Monday:

Intermediate and Junior Band will rehearse together in the Burns Road Band Room under the baton of Beck and Mr Gott – arrival time 7:50am for an 8:00am rehearsal. This will give students in the Intermediate Band the opportunity to mentor and lead the Junior Band players, and Junior Band students will experience a taste of what the next level up is like. The initial repertoire will be Do Re Mi and A Minor Journey (Intermediate Band students will be given the music for A Minor Journey on Monday at rehearsal.

Tuesday:

Concert Band will rehearse as usual in the Burns Road Band Room under the baton of Mr Gott – arrival time 7:50am for an 8:00am rehearsal. Concert Band repertoire is as follows: WPS Burns Road March; Conquest; The Hiding Place; Happy; Mamma Mia; Grease; YMCA; Kelvin Grove; Mambo No. 5; and Living For The City.

The initial repertoire will be Enchantment; Swansea Town and Stadium Rock. (Junior Band students will be given the music for these three pieces on Wednesday at rehearsal.

All students should have access to their band’s Google Classroom page which has recordings of the pieces including the guide/click tracks for the Virtual Band Project pieces. These recordings are invaluable resources for student learning. A reminder that a fun way to practise is for students to play along with the Percussion 1 recording part to see how their part fits in with the rest of the band.
