Band News - Term 2, Week 8

WHAT A WEEK IT HAS BEEN!

Band rehearsals resumed after almost a term apart and it has been astonishing to see that despite the hiatus, the students pulled together as a team and are making beautiful music as one. Special thanks to all the parents who supported the children through online lessons during the period, and to the tutors for being creative in lesson delivery. It was a very quick turn-around from face-to-face tutorials to online, and both the students and tutors adapted incredibly well to the changed learning platform. It is fabulous to see all bands and recorder groups rehearsing and learning once again, and this week was one to celebrate!

BEGINNER BAND:

Beginner Band rehearsals returned in full swing now and students are working very hard. This week we concentrated on the piece called Enchantment. This morning the Beginner Band played from beginning to end of the one-page-long piece and we have asked that this piece is this week’s focus piece. The next piece we will work on is Swansea Town. Thank you for encouraging and reminding your children to practise these pieces this week. A reminder that the recordings of Enchantment and Swansea Town are on Google Classroom as an excellent learning resource for the students to support their practise at home.

Player of the Week resumed this week - for excellent concentration and participation in rehearsal. This student is given the special Beginner Band music stand to use for the following rehearsal. The recipient of the ‘Player of the Rehearsal’ from Tuesday’s rehearsal was Lucy C (Bass Guitar) and Hannah F (Clarinet) from Friday’s rehearsal. Congratulations Lucy and Hannah!

The Beginner Band Musician of the Week was awarded to Yuni K (Flute). The Musician of the Week is awarded to a Beginner Band member who shows a respectful and positive attitude, a willingness to learn and to help others, punctuality and demonstrated musicality. The Musician of the Week receives a certificate, and the trophy to take home for the week. Congratulations Yuni!

We would like to especially acknowledge the Concert Band Mentors who so generously gave up their time to come along to Wednesday’s Beginner Band rehearsal this week to support and mentor the Beginner Band students. Thank you Lily G and Amelia A for helping to make the rehearsal run so smoothly, and for being so giving of your time and expertise.

A reminder that Beginner Band tutorials are on a Monday, and the two rehearsals each week are on Wednesday morning and Friday morning. Both rehearsals are held in the Burns Road Band Room. Students, please arrive at 7:50am, leave your school bag outside the band room, carefully unpack your instrument and come into the band room ready for the rehearsal to begin at 8:00am.

JUNIOR BAND:

It was great to see Junior Band back together again this week. This week’s focus piece is A Minor Journey – the piece we are working on for the Virtual Band Project. Please encourage your child to listen to the click/guide track and start practising with it, getting ready to record their part. Further information will be emailed to parents in the coming week.

A reminder that Junior Band rehearses on Monday and Wednesday mornings in the Water Street Band Room. Students should arrive at 7:50am to set up their instrument and be ready for the rehearsal to start at 8:00am.

Junior Band Musician of the Week will resume in Week 9.

INTERMEDIATE BAND:

There were lots of happy faces as Intermediate Band rehearsals resumed this week. The new piece Burns Road March was introduced, written by Mr Gott for the Virtual Band Project. Please encourage your child to listen to the click/guide track and start practising with it, getting ready to record their part. Further information will be emailed to parents in the coming week.

Intermediate Band Musician of the Week will resume in Week 9.

CONCERT BAND:

Concert Band’s rehearsals this week grew in greatness! The students worked hard and have many pieces in progress. New pieces include Mr Gott’s composition Burns Road March and Living for the City. Thank you for encouraging your child to focus on these two pieces together with Kelvin Grove, the piece for Concert Band’s Virtual Band Project. Please encourage your child to listen to the click/guide track and start practising with it, getting ready to record their part. Further information will be emailed to parents in the coming week.

Concert Band Musician of the Week will resume in Week 9.

STAGE BAND:

What a great first rehearsal back! Stage Band students ‘wowed’ Mr Carger with their focus, mature understanding and rehearsal of the chart The Way You Look Tonight. Students continue to learn the blues scale and how to improvise. Congratulations to all students involved in this specialised group.

RECORDER TUTORIALS:

Recorder tutorials resumed this week and Mrs Moor enjoyed seeing the students in Year 1 and 2 back learning new notes and pieces. The combined lessons from 8:15 – 8:50am will continue for the rest of the term in line with the staggered school start times.

Please contact us if your child would like to join the Band Program or learn recorder – it is never too late to join! Please do not hesitate to contact Kate Spencer or Kylie Lee in the Burns Road Band Room on the below details should you have any queries.
