Band News - Term 2, Week 5

The Band Program is very excited to announce a unique and special educational project - a ‘silver lining’ in the days of COVID-19. Students in Junior, Intermediate and Concert Bands are invited to participate in Wahroonga Public School’s Virtual Band Project, a first in the history of the school. Details have been emailed out to parents – would you please confirm your child’s participation in this performance opportunity by Monday 1 June.

All families in the Band Program should have received an email this week outlining how the Band Program will operate for the remainder of this semester. As government guidelines may change in terms of how rehearsals and tutorials are allowed to proceed, we will communicate further plans for Semester Two later this term.

Tutorials continue online at this stage, with some students having lessons at school and others from their home. Tutors will be in contact to advise of specific tutorial times. Students having their tutorials at school, please note that all tutorials will be held in the Burns Road Band Room. The schedule is very full and we will be unable to go looking for students who do not attend their lessons. Students are asked to please arrive at the Burns Road Band Room ten minutes prior to their tutorial starting, unpack their instrument on the verandah and leave the case outside, quietly enter the room and use the hand sanitiser, and wait for your tutorial to start. Kate will be there supervising and supporting the students.

Auditions will be offered to some students later this term who show consistent practise ethic and improvement, are respectful to their tutors, conductors and peers during rehearsals (term 1) and in tutorials, and are musically ready for the next step. One of the audition criteria for Junior to Intermediate Band will be to play the ‘test piece’ Do-Re-Mi (the combined Junior/Intermediate Band piece), and for Intermediate to Concert Band, the ‘test piece’ will be Mamma Mia. So keep practising, learn your scales, and prepare a piece of your own choice. More details to follow.

All individual instrument recordings for the band pieces have been uploaded as learning resources on the various Google Classroom pages. Weekly Recorder and Stage Band Tutorials will continue to be uploaded for students to access from the respective Google Classroom pages.

Please do not hesitate to contact Kate Spencer or Kylie Lee in the Burns Road Band Room on the below details should you have any queries.
