Band News - Term 1, Week 6

The Wahroonga Music Festival is the Band Program’s biggest fundraiser for the year and funds raised help to keep the band fees as low as possible. Bands from all over Sydney come to our school to perform and compete for the title of champion band for their section, and to receive constructive feedback from an experienced adjudicator. In the past, there have been rides and delicious food stalls, and all of our concert bands perform on the day. We ask all parents in the Band Program to please volunteer some of their time before and/or on the day to support the event. This year, the Wahroonga Music Festival will be held on Sunday 21 June.

There will be a meeting for parents on Tuesday 24 March at 7:00pm in the Staffroom to discuss fund-raising ideas for the day, and we invite all parents to please come to the meeting and join in the efforts to make the day a really special one for everyone involved. There will also be time on the evening of 24 March to ask any questions you may have about band, and to put forward any suggestions. We hope to see many of you there!

Beginner Band

Beginner Band students are now playing several short pieces up until piece #21 in the red Standard of Excellence book. All students will move at their own pace, with regular practise sessions assisting in their progress. Every student will now be having weekly tutorials with their tutor.

Each rehearsal, a student in Beginner Band will be awarded Player of the Week for excellent concentration and participation in rehearsal, and this student is given the special Beginner Band music stand to use for the following rehearsal. The recipient of the ‘Player of the Rehearsal’ from Tuesday’s rehearsal was Clementine K (Percussion) and Coco D (Alto Saxophone) from Friday’s rehearsal. Congratulations Clementine and Coco!

Each week, a Beginner Band student is awarded the Musician of the Week trophy and certificate. This week the Musician of the Week was awarded to Luke S (Alto Saxophone). The Musician of the Week is awarded to a Beginner Band member who shows a respectful and positive attitude, a willingness to learn and to help others, punctuality and demonstrated musicality. The Musician of the Week receives a certificate, and the trophy to take home for the week. Congratulations Luke!

We would like to especially acknowledge the Concert Band Mentors – Lily G, Ananya P, Audrey L, Amelia A, Isabelle H, Anita G, Gene K, Dylan K, Violet K and Nehara D who so generously gave up their time to come along to the Beginner Band rehearsals this week to support and mentor the Beginner Band students. Thank you to you all for helping to make the rehearsal run so smoothly, and for being so giving of your time and expertise.

A reminder that Beginner Band students all have a tutorial on a Monday, and two rehearsals each week – one on Wednesday morning and the other on Friday morning. Both rehearsals are held in the Burns Road Band Room. Students, please arrive at 7:50am, leave your school bag outside the band room, carefully unpack your instrument and come into the band room ready for the rehearsal to begin at 8:00am.

Junior Band

The students in Junior Band have been rehearsing Wahroonga Blues, A Royal Procession, A Minor Journey and now The Road to El Paso, all composed by Mr Gott especially for Junior Band. All parents will have the chance to hear the world premiere of these pieces at the Band Workshop on the afternoon of Saturday 4 April. Thank you for encouraging your child to practise these four pieces during their practise this week.

The Junior Band Musician of the Week was awarded to Ellie P (Tuba). The Musician of the Week is awarded to a Junior Band member who is punctual, shows a respectful and positive attitude, a willingness to learn and to help others, and demonstrated musicality. The recipient of the Junior Band Musician of the Week will receive a certificate, and the trophy to take home for the week. Congratulations Ellie!

Intermediate Band is sounding terrific. Over the Rainbow and Shackelford Banks are two of the pieces the band will perform at upcoming competitions and performances. Please encourage your child to focus on these two pieces this week. The Intermediate Band Musician of the Week was awarded to Keagan S (Keyboard) this week. Thank you parents for supporting and reminding your children to practise these pieces. Please contact us if your child would like to join the Band Program or learn recorder – it is never too late to join!

Diary Dates:

All students in the Band Program (not recorder students) will be involved in a Band Workshop during the afternoon of Saturday 4 April. The four bands will each have a tutorial, rehearsal, a delicious afternoon tea, and the afternoon will culminate in a short concert. Families and friends are encouraged to attend, and we will be asking for parent volunteers to please assist with making and serving afternoon tea, supervising tutorials and rehearsals, and general set up and pack down. This is a great opportunity to see the bands in action! Please consider volunteering some of your time on this day – further information to follow.

Please do not hesitate to contact Kate Spencer or Kylie Lee in the Burns Road Band Room on the below details should you have any queries.
