Band News - Term 1, Week 4

BAND NEWS – Term 1 Week 4

Beginner Band

Beginner Band rehearsals are in full swing now and all students are working very hard to achieve great results. Thank you to those students and parents for your patience and understanding while we confirm tutors and tutorials. French Horn tutorials for all horn students will commence next week with Rafael Salgado.

Each rehearsal, a student in Beginner Band will be awarded Player of the Week for excellent concentration and participation in rehearsal, and this student is given the special Beginner Band music stand to use for the following rehearsal. The recipient of the ‘Player of the Rehearsal’ from Tuesday’s rehearsal was Annaliese S (Clarinet) and Keira E (Clarinet) from Friday’s rehearsal). Congratulations Annaliese and Keira!

Each week, a Beginner Band student is awarded the Musician of the Week trophy and certificate. This week the Musician of the Week was awarded to Lara E (Euphonium). The Musician of the Week is awarded to a Beginner Band member who shows a respectful and positive attitude, a willingness to learn and to help others, punctuality and demonstrated musicality. The Musician of the Week receives a certificate, and the trophy to take home for the week. Congratulations Lara!

We would like to especially acknowledge the Concert Band Mentors who so generously gave up their time to come along to the Beginner Band rehearsals this week to support and mentor the Beginner Band students. Thank you to you all for helping to make the rehearsal run so smoothly, and for being so giving of your time and expertise.

A reminder that Beginner Band students all have a tutorial on a Monday, and two rehearsals each week – one on Wednesday morning and the other on Friday morning. Both rehearsals are held in the Burns Road Band Room. Students, please arrive at 7:50am, leave your school bag outside the band room, carefully unpack your instrument and come into the band room ready for the rehearsal to begin at 8:00am.

Junior Band

Junior Band is off to a great start. We are incredibly fortunate to have both a conductor who is also a composer and this week, Mr Gott wrote a composition for Junior Band called Wahroonga Blues. Have a listen to your child’s part this week – the piece sounds great and parents will have the chance to hear it at the Band Workshop on the afternoon of Saturday 4 April. Thank you for encouraging your child to practise these two pieces during their practise this week.

The Junior Band Musician of the Week was awarded to Heidi F (French Horn). The Musician of the Week is awarded to a Junior Band member who is punctual, shows a respectful and positive attitude, a willingness to learn and to help others, and demonstrated musicality. The recipient of the Junior Band Musician of the Week will receive a certificate, and the trophy to take home for the week. Congratulations Heidi!

Intermediate Band students are working hard and Over the Rainbow and Shackelford Banks are sounding great! Please encourage your child to focus on these two pieces this week. The Intermediate Band Musician of the Week was awarded to Megan Y (Alto Saxophone) this week. The Musician of the Week is awarded to an Intermediate Band member who is punctual, shows a respectful and positive attitude, a willingness to learn and to help others, and demonstrated musicality. Congratulations Megan!

Concert Band students commenced rehearsals on The Incredibles 2 this week and are further consolidating Kelvin Grove, Conquest and The Hiding Place (the latter named after the memoir of Corrie ten Boom). Thank you parents for supporting and reminding your children to practise these pieces. Concert Band will be auditioning for a special event soon so it is imperative that everyone knows their part well. The Concert Band Musician of the Week was awarded to Sasha T (Trombone) this week. The Musician of the Week is awarded to a Concert Band member who is punctual, shows a respectful and positive attitude, a willingness to learn and to help others, and demonstrated musicality. The recipient of the Concert Band Musician of the Week receives a certificate, and the coveted trophy to take home for the week. Congratulations Sasha!

Notes for the Recorder Program were distributed this week with rehearsals commencing in Week 6. All notes are due back to the School Office by Tuesday 25 February if you wish your child to do recorder.

Please contact us if your child would like to join the Band Program or learn recorder – it is never too late to join!

Diary Dates:

All students in the Band Program (not recorder students) will be involved in a Band Workshop during the afternoon of Saturday 4 April. The four bands will each have a tutorial, rehearsal, a delicious afternoon tea, and the afternoon will culminate in a short concert. Families and friends are encouraged to attend, and we will be asking for parent volunteers to please assist with making and serving afternoon tea, supervising tutorials and rehearsals, and general set up and pack down. This is a great opportunity to see the bands in action! Please consider volunteering some of your time on this day – further information to follow.

Please do not hesitate to contact Kate Spencer or Kylie Lee in the Burns Road Band Room on the below details should you have any queries.
