Band News - Term 1, Week 2, 2021

BAND NEWS – Term 1 Week 2

Hello, and a very warm welcome to the 2021 Wahroonga Public School Band Program. It is great to see so many students returning for another year of music-making, and close to 70 new Year 3 students joining the 2021 Beginner Band. Throughout the year, parents with students enrolled in the Band Program will receive emails pertaining to their child’s band or recorder group; and there will be an updated Band News each week in the school newsletter. The conductors and tutors are looking forward to meeting everyone for a terrific year ahead.

This year we will have three concert bands: Beginner Band; Intermediate Band and Concert Band; and a Stage Band (rock, blues and jazz). Rebecca (Beck) Heather will be conducting Beginner Band; Beck and Mr Gott will co-conduct Intermediate Band; and Concert Band will be under the baton of Mr Gott. Mr Carger will conduct Stage Band again this year. Mrs Moor will be tutoring Recorder this year for the Year 1 and 2 students.

We have a dynamic team of tutors who are passionate about music education. They are as follows:

Flute: Suellen Monaghan and Stephanie Ng

Clarinet: Peter Salkeld, Beck Heather, Jemma Bartlett and Jordan Brynes

Saxophone: Beck Heather, Craig Bradfield, Jemma Bartlett and Jordan Brynes

French Horn: Rafael Salgado

Trumpet: Will Endicott and John Pennings

Trombone: Nick Barnard and Arthur Johnson

Lower Brass (Euphonium and Tuba): Jess Ling

Bass Guitar and Keyboard: Joe Manton

Percussion: Andy Davies and Hunter Clarke

Each week, a student from each of the Beginner, Intermediate and Concert Bands will be awarded the 2021 Musician of the Week trophy. The Musician of the Week is awarded to a student who shows a respectful and positive attitude, a willingness to learn and to help others, punctuality and demonstrated musicality. The Musician of the Week receives a certificate, and the trophy to take home for the week.

In addition, each rehearsal, a student in the Beginner Band will be awarded Player of the Week for excellent concentration and participation in rehearsal. This student will be given the special Beginner Band music stand to use for the following rehearsal.

Beginner Band:

Beginner Band students will receive their instruments (for those who are hiring instruments this year); their music book and folder on Monday 15 February. Hire agreement forms will be given to students next week, and students are asked to bring the signed hire agreement form to the Water Street Band Room at 8:30am on Monday 15 February where the instruments, music book and folder will be distributed. Students may only take their instruments home once the signed hire agreement has been received.

Tutorials for Beginner Band will commence on Monday 15 February. Tutors will focus on instrument care and how to put the instrument together in the first tutorial, and then how to play the instrument. This will be a very exciting day for the Beginner Band students!

Please note, due to the swimming carnival, there will be no rehearsal on Wednesday 17 February. The very first Beginner Band rehearsal will therefore be on Monday 22 February on the silver seats under the COLA adjacent to the Burns Road Band Room, when all students would have had a tutorial, have their instruments and be ready to go! Students should arrive at 7:50am ready for a rehearsal from 8:00am – 9:00am. Beginner Band will rehearse on Monday and Wednesday mornings this year. While the Monday rehearsals will be on the silver seats under the COLA adjacent to the Burns Road Band Room, the Wednesday rehearsals will be in the Burns Road Band Room.

Intermediate Band:

This year, we are excited to have an Intermediate Band with 61 students from Year 4 and 5.

All students in Intermediate Band who are hiring instruments should have received a hire agreement form by now, and may collect their instruments on Monday 8 February from the Burns Road Band Room from 8:30am. Intermediate Band students in Year 4 will commence their tutorials on Monday 8 February. Intermediate Band students in Year 5 will commence their tutorials on Wednesday 10 February. The first rehearsal for Intermediate Band will be Wednesday 10 February on the silver seats under the COLA adjacent to the Burns Road Band Room. Intermediate Band will rehearse on Wednesday and Thursday mornings this year. Both rehearsals for now will be held on the silver seats under the COLA. Please note, due to the swimming carnival, there will be no rehearsal nor tutorials on Wednesday 17 February.

Concert Band:

This year, we are excited to have 42 students from Year 5 and 6 in the Concert Band.

All students in Concert Band who are hiring instruments should have received a hire agreement form by now, and may collect their instruments on Monday 8 February from the Burns Road Band Room from 7:30am prior to the first Concert Band rehearsal of the year at 7:50am in the Burns Road Band Room. Concert Band students will commence their tutorials on Wednesday 10 February. Concert Band will rehearse on Monday and Thursday mornings this year. Both rehearsals will be held in the Burns Road Band Room.

Students will receive more information pertaining to Stage Band on Monday 8 February in the Concert Band rehearsal. Please note, due to the swimming carnival, there will be no tutorials nor Stage Band on Wednesday 17 February.

Recorder Program:

Notes for the Recorder Program were distributed at the end of 2020 with tutorials commencing in Week 4. There are spare Recorder Enrolment forms at the school office. Please return recorder enrolment notes by Monday 8 February. Keep an eye out for the notes to be a part of either the Beginner or Advanced Recorder Group.

Please contact us if your child would like to join the Band Program or learn recorder – it is never too late to join!
