September 2019

REPORT BY TORI D, 6FV
It was an honour to be able to speak at NSW Parliament House on Thursday 12 September. I was able to present my thoughts in front of Alister Henskens SC MP, Member for Ku-ring-gai, and some professional public speaking judges. It was a great experience to listen to the amazing speeches from other students in the Ku-ring-gai electorate. After the three-minute prepared speech on 'Has the Lucky Country run out of luck?' I gave a two-minute impromptu on 'A friend in need is a friend indeed'. With our families, we were then escorted to a room for morning tea and the results were announced. I was pleased to hear I came second runner-up to some very talented speakers. It was a lot of fun! Thanks to Yasmin and to Mrs Voysey for coming with me as my support team.

SUPER DIVER
Congratulations to Arabelle M from 4S! She competed in the Frank Murphy Diving Interclub competition run by Diving NSW held at Sydney Olympic Park. She came first in her category, a wonderful result.

"It is the best experience in the world and gives me the opportunity to perform in public," says Niamh. "I wouldn't swap it for anything!"

Erin adds: "Gang Show is a lot of commitment but overall is really exciting."
We wish the two girls good luck!

It was an unexpected surprise and something that I am very thankful for. I felt very proud to represent our school in this fantastic tournament. Thank you again everyone, have a lovely Christmas!

August 2018

Ice Racing New South Wales have sent through acknowledgement of some wonderful representation by both Gavin and Jack Hakim. Gavin competed at the Duke Trophy 2018 competition. This is national short track speed skating event where skaters from across Australia score points for the state they represent and hence it is also dubbed as the “State of Origin on Ice”. Gavin is a developing skater competed for the first time in the Junior B division. He showed great sportsmanship and athleticism. We are very proud of his achievement and hope he will further develop in the sport.
Gavin’s brother Jack Hakim (class 3K) supported his brother at the event by assisting the administration team as a volunteer. Wahroonga Public School is very proud of the achievement of these students!

Niamh has earned her Junior BP Award, which is the highest achievement for Junior Guides (aged 7-10). She had to complete 12 challenges and demonstrate her leadership skills. Well done, Niamh!

Over the last couple of months Haidee U and Sophia F in Year 5 have been tirelessly creating dream catchers and other rainbow themed craft as well as cookies and cakes to raise money for charity. In their first stall they raised $144 for the Fred Hollows Foundation.  In their most recent stall in the holidays the girls, along with some other friends helping out on the day, and thanks to some special orders that have come in since, raised $213 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service! They would like to thank the generous people of Wahroonga for their much appreciated support!

Gavin has excelled in many sporting endeavours outside school. He recently competed at a NSW state Ice Racing tournament, placing 4th for his age. He has been selected as part of the relay team which is hoping to compete at nationals. Gavin’s speed skating takes considerable commitment to training. He trains 5 days a week, sometimes up until 11:30pm. This dedication is remarkable! Gavin’s basket-balling achievements took him to Melbourne last week in a tournament featuring sides from both Australia and internationally. Gavin’s team, the Hornsby Spiders, finished second in their division, going down in a heartbreaking grand final. Gavin is the team’s point guard. He sets up plays and has a mean left handed lay-up. He hopes to one day emulate his favourite player Kyrie Irving! In term 1 Gavin also represented Hornsby Lions in the state NSW Touch Football cup! Each time Gavin represents at high level in sport, he is proud to say that he is a student of Wahroonga Public School. Congratulations Gavin!
