Creative Arts

The development of each pupil’s potential in the creative arts is an important ingredient of the school’s curriculum. The students are encouraged to participate in a range of extra-curricular creative activities including choir, recorder, band and dance groups in addition to participation in in-class creative arts curriculum activities. Students perform both within the school and at district concerts and local eisteddfods.

In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts where they learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform.

Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.

Music

As part of the school’s release from face (RFF) to face program, every child at Wahroonga attends one 40 minute music session each week. Music is explored at school by focussing on 5 ways of producing sound:

·       Pitch – how high or low

·       Tempo – how fast or slow

·       Dynamics – how loud or soft

·       Duration – how long or short

·       Tone colour – how different

All students are given opportunities to play a variety of un-tuned and tuned musical percussion instruments. Simple notation is taught using graphic notation and standard musical notation. Music appreciation forms a large component of this program.

School Concert

A triennial concert featuring all students in a performance of dance, drama or song occurs. These concerts are usually held over two nights with a matinee performance as well.
