What is Selective Education?
Selective education is a pathway offered by the Department of Education to nurture students with high academic potential. It includes both selective high schools and opportunity classes like ours. This approach offers multiple benefits, including:
- Learning alongside other high potential and gifted students, fostering strong friendships
- Access to specialised teaching methods that allow students to learn faster and in greater depth
- Evidence-based benefits both academically and socially from studying with peers who have similar abilities
- Opportunity classes are not restricted by geographic zones, so families can apply to schools outside their local area.
What are Opportunity Classes?
Opportunity classes are available for students in Years 5 and 6. Admission to these classes requires an application during Year 4, with families allowed to choose up to two preferred schools.
Our Opportunity Class at Wahroonga Public School provides:
- A stimulating and supportive learning environment
- Challenging and enriched curriculum that extends beyond grade-level expectations
- Opportunities to develop talents at a pace suited to each student’s potential
- The chance to build friendships with like-minded, motivated peers
Is Selective Education the Right Fit for Your Child?
High potential and gifted students come from all kinds of backgrounds and can show a range of traits such as:
- Enjoying learning and displaying intense curiosity
- Having a strong memory and asking complex questions
- Thriving on new, complex ideas and skills with fewer repetitions
- Displaying creativity and deep focus in their interests
It’s important to note that not all gifted students will show every one of these characteristics, especially if they face disability, disadvantage, or limited opportunities.
High potential students often excel faster and may benefit from enriched or extended learning experiences. Gifted and highly gifted students typically develop mastery much earlier and may need specially tailored curriculum adjustments to support both their learning and wellbeing.
